We bled the radiator together. A satisfying hiss of escaping air, followed by water dribbling out. Within minutes, the entire radiator heated evenly for the first time in months.

How to bleed a radiator properly:

You’ll need a radiator key (available from any hardware shop for £2-3), a cloth, and a small container.

  1. Turn off your heating system and wait for radiators to cool. This prevents hot water spraying out.

  2. Locate the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator – usually the opposite end from the pipes. It’s a small square socket.

I balanced their system, which took about 45 minutes. Afterward, every room heated evenly at the same rate. “I thought living rooms were just naturally warmer,” the homeowner said. “I didn’t realize it was stealing heat from our bedrooms.”

Should you adjust lockshield valves yourself? Maybe, but proceed cautiously. Removing the plastic cap reveals a valve spindle you can turn with pliers or an adjustable spanner. Turning clockwise restricts flow; anti-clockwise increases it.

If one radiator in your home heats whilst others don’t, try partially closing the lockshield on the hot radiator. This forces more water to other radiators. But be careful – incorrect adjustment can make heating worse rather than better.

By the time they called us, their circulation pump had completely failed and sludge had damaged several radiator valves. The repair bill ran to £650. Had they called when the first radiator failed, we could have prevented the cascade of problems with a £120 intervention.


The Radiator Checklist

Step 6: Call Professional If:

  • None of the above worked
  • Problem persists or worsens
  • Multiple radiators affected
  • Pressure drops repeatedly
  • Strange noises or visible leaks
